California Modern Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition “Special Effects”, opening on February 28th . This is a four artists show featuring primarily abstract paintings and some figurative sculptures.

Andrzej Karwacki’s paintings explore aspects of pop art culture, color, texture, and imagination. With a background in architecture and figure illustration, Andrzej sees painting as a visual language between form and composition, color and emotion. In his painting style, he aspires to such artist as Turner, Maxfield Parish, Roshenberg, Gustav Klimt and Richard Hamilton.

The striated paintings by Sydell Lewis with their richly textured, colorful surfaces are balanced to be viewed from all vertical, horizontal and diagonal positions. These multi -orientation canvases are mounted on rotation devices. With each 45-degree turn vertical textures morph into graphic diagonals and then become horizontal conceptual landscapes. The artist developed two types of rotation devices: manual and automated. The manual device requires the viewer to physically move the canvas to each orientation. The automated device allows the viewer to observe all transitions.

Sydell Lewis, “Sway”, 40” x 40” mixed media

Laura Lengyel’s fascinating life sized monotypes are not only an exciting experience in color, texture and scale but are part of SOMA’s most creative artistic production. Inspired by mid century Abstract Expressionism and Action Field painting, Lengyel developed a novel printing process that crosses printmaking, painting and performance, and abstract and figurative art. She became known as San Francisco’s original body painter for her experiments with making prints from her painted models during numerous public performance works. She refers to her prints as Monopressings & Flex-O-Grams, created to celebrate natural human form and an alternate view of the body. Her sculptures reflect her interest in contemporary iconic figures.

“Indian Summer”, Mark Harris, 35” x 60” acrylic on canvas

Self taught as an artist Mark makes exceptional use of color and composition in his paintings. His keen eye and ability to create strong, beautiful, contemporary images have helped him develop a following. Harris’ style can be described as bold and sophisticated and his body of work demonstrates a remarkably broad range of artistic talent. Harris continues to develop his unique visual vocabulary and is an emerging artist to keep your eye on. His work is included in private and corporate collections from the San Francisco Bay Area, to Chicago to Atlanta.
